Ravi Shastri Breaks Silence on Virat Kohli’s Retirement Decision

Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket shocked the cricketing world. Just weeks before India’s crucial five-match Test series against England, Kohli announced his departure from the longest format. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who shared a close bond with Kohli, has now revealed details of their conversation before the announcement.

Virat Kohli’s Retirement Decision

As per Shastri, Kohli called him a week prior to announcing his retirement. The ex-captain was in his mind made up and had no second thoughts about it. “His mind was very clear… there were no doubts,” Shastri stated.

The Toll of Intensity

Kohli’s arrogant take to the game has made him one of the most passionate and committed players in Indian cricket history till date. However, Ravi Shastri stated that he believes this intensity may have caused mental exhaustion to him. “It’s as if he had to take all the wickets, all the catches, make all the decisions. That kind of involvement takes a toll,” Shastri explained.

Virat Kohli’s Legacy in Test Cricket

Kohli is leaving behind a breathtaking Test record, with 9,230 runs at the rate of 30 centuries. Kohli, the most successful Test captain for India, took the team to 40 wins in 68 matches, including milestone victories in Australia and the West Indies.

The Impact of Stardom

Shastri recognized the pressure that Kohli’s worldwide popularity created. “He has a larger fan base than any cricketer in the past decade,” Shastri said, pointing out how Kohli drew humongous crowds all over the globe.

Although Shastri conceded that he had thought Kohli had two to three years of Test cricket remaining, he respected the choice. “Sometimes, if you delay, you have regrets. Kohli has none,” he concluded.
