Hyderabad Traffic: A Reddit post criticising Hyderabad’s chaotic driving conditions recently went viral, fuelling a hot online debate among netizens on the issue of traffic discipline, or rather the absence of it, in the city.

A Frustrated Citizen Speaks Up

The user, claiming to be a Hyderabad resident, vented his frustration about the utter absence of road sense he had experienced on recent city roads. Numerous are the accounts he recounted of two-wheelers and cars moving against the flow in a one-way lane, endangering their own lives and others.

In fact, during one incident near the Financial District, his encounter suddenly turned frightening when a car drove straight towards him in the middle of a one-way lane. “There was a BMW and a BYD in front of me so I couldn’t see it. Suddenly, the BYD made a sharp turn and I realised a car was coming directly towards me”, he wrote.

No Rules, No Enforcement

The Redditor contended that this happens every other day in different parts of the city. He stated that there are hardly any visible enforcement, CCTV cameras, or police patrols in important traffic areas. The bottom line is, “There are no traffic rules being followed… you drive at your own risk,” to which he added, people do not care about their own safety or the safety of others.

The post quickly gained steam on Reddit to the point that it attracted hundreds of comments. Many seconded the original post by offering their own experience with reckless drivers and people overtaking them on the wrong side of the road or through red lights, while others blamed such violations and lawlessness on poor road design or lack of enforcement.
