The filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) has once again landed himself in hot waters because of an insensitive social media post during Diwali. The post said: “In INDIA only one day is DIWALI and in GAZA every day is DIWALI🔥🔥🔥.” The tweet was an attempt to make light of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and has been bashed by people all over the nation.
The responses in social media erupted with anger even before RGV’s post would have gone viral. Most of them condemned the filmmaker with tone-deaf humor at a time when thousands innocently cry for their lives during war. “You will take years to become a human. You don’t even know the difference between celebration and devastation,” was one of the comments.
Another commented that he disrespected the festival by saying Diwali is celebrating the return of Lord Ram, a season of light and positivity associated with war and death. “We celebrate death on Diwali?”.
After all these, the students yet further added fire to the wave by pointing out that people propagate false views about Indian culture or religion based on such remarks. “We Indians and Hindus face hatred abroad because of posts like these. Delete it,” one comment read. Others even went on to term the comments as “‘horrific’ and ‘inhuman.'”
Most were equally firm that Gaza does not need dark humor-it needs compassion and humanity. The post has also been widely referred to as disrespectful and indecent, given the times of conflict and suffering.
Currently, RGV has chosen not to clarify or apologize for the same, but his post on Diwali has thrown again into the courtroom of debate the issues on freedom of expression in the country and the responsibility that free people carry on social sites.
