Russia and Ukraine Peace Talks:On Monday, Russia and Ukraine met in Istanbul, Turkey, for a new round of peace talks. The meeting was held at the Ciragan Palace and lasted for over an hour. This was the second time in two weeks that both countries held direct discussions to find a way to end the ongoing war, which has lasted for more than three years.
The Ukrainian delegation was led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. After the talks, Umerov shared that both sides agreed on a new exchange of prisoners of war. This exchange will focus on people who are severely injured and younger detainees. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan hosted the meeting, and Turkish intelligence officials were also present.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking from Lithuania, said that both countries shared documents through Turkey and are working on the next group of prisoners to be released. However, key disagreements between the two nations continue, and no clear agreement on ending the war has been made yet.
The fighting on the battlefield has not stopped. The front line stretches nearly 1,000 kilometers, and both sides continue to launch attacks deep into each other’s territory.
Just a day before the peace talks, Ukraine launched a large drone attack on Russian airbases. According to Ukraine’s Security Service, over 40 Russian aircraft were damaged. In response, Russia launched missile and drone attacks on Ukraine.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that it shot down 162 Ukrainian drones overnight across eight regions and Crimea. Ukraine’s air force said it intercepted 52 out of the 80 drones launched by Russia.
On the same day, two ballistic missiles hit the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. One of the missiles landed near a school, according to the city’s mayor.
Despite efforts to negotiate peace, violence continues on both sides, showing how difficult it remains to reach a lasting solution.
