Sonam Plots Husband’s Murder: Four days after her marriage to Raja, Sonam Raghuwanshi had made her way back to her parents’ house in Uttar Pradesh for a traditional post-nuptial rite. However, according to a Times of India article, she allegedly plotted her husband’s murder with her ex-lover, Raj Kushwaha, during this visit, according to authorities.
Honeymoon Horror:
Tragedy struck while the couple was honeymooning in Meghalaya. During their trip, Sonam reported Raja missing, which led authorities to suspect the newlyweds had gotten lost. However, on June 2, officials discovered Raja’s body in a deep gorge. They also found a blood-stained jacket, a machete, and a mobile phone nearby. Since his gold chain and ring were missing, investigators initially suspected a robbery gone wrong.
Authorities formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and involved intelligence units, the NDRF, and the SDRF. The case took a dramatic turn after police arrested Sonam at a dhaba in Uttar Pradesh. Soon after, they apprehended four suspects, Raj, Akash Rajput (21), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Anand Kurmi (23), from Indore, Satna, and Lalitpur. Sonam, however, denied any involvement in Raja’s murder. “I didn’t kill my husband,” she told the police. Referring to the four accused men, she added, “They killed him for the jewelry.”

Sonam’s Relationship with Raj:
Sonam had dated Raj before marrying Raja. Raj worked as an accountant in Sonam’s family business. Despite Raj moving away a year ago, police believe he and Sonam remained in contact. Reports say her family disapproved of the relationship and used their community network to arrange her marriage to Raja.
Khasi Hills East SP Vivek Syiem said Sonam shared her location with Raj during the couple’s trip. After visiting the Kamakhya shrine in Guwahati, authorities believe the attackers began following them. According to media reports, Raj stayed in Indore while Akash, Vishal, and Anand traveled by train to Assam. The group reportedly purchased the murder weapon in Guwahati.
Sonam also persuaded Raja to extend their stay in Shillong. On May 23, a local guide named Albert Pde informed the police that he saw the couple with three Hindi-speaking men near Nongriat hamlet. This tip played a crucial role in linking the suspects to the crime. SP Syiem told the media, “Everything points to prior planning. We will confirm the details after questioning the suspects together.”
