Bhopal Classroom Incident: While the teacher and another student were interacting, plaster from the ceiling fell on a student sitting at the front desk and injured her. The school remained in session, students sat in their places, and the teacher continued delivering the lesson. This incident at PM Shri Maharani Laxmibai Girls School in Barkheda Pathani, Bhopal, once again exposed the deteriorating state of Madhya Pradesh’s educational infrastructure. CCTV footage from the classroom shows the plaster falling on the student around 11:54 a.m. while the teacher was teaching.
Despite the chaos, some students stayed calm and rushed to help their injured classmate. The school staff administered first aid and sent her home.
The incident raised further concern because the principal had already warned officials about potential risks. She had written to the District Education Officer, reporting that continuous rainfall had weakened and dampened the ceilings of several classrooms. While workers repaired some parts of the school, they ignored the damaged classroom.

The authorities also forwarded a copy of this letter to Phanda’s Block Education Officer. However, no representative from the education department has provided any explanation. The media contacted NK Ahirwar, the District Education Officer of Bhopal, but he did not return the calls. This incident highlights a larger crisis in Madhya Pradesh’s government education system. Official statistics obtained by the media reveal that 1,022 schools operate in buildings that are either unsafe or do not exist.

Even more alarming, thousands of schools lack basic infrastructure. Over 12,000 government schools function with only one teacher. Around 9,500 schools still do not have electricity. Authorities have not yet constructed 3,342 approved classrooms. In addition, more than 2,972 schools still do not have restrooms for girls. The government continues to ignore repeated warnings about the crumbling foundation of public education. The injured student at Maharani Laxmibai School may have suffered only minor injuries, but how long before another student isn’t so lucky?
