Swetcha Votarkar, a senior journalist with T News, died in a suspected suicide at her home in Chikkadpally on Friday evening. She was 36.
Her daughter arrived home and found the bedroom door locked. Neighbours broke it open and discovered Swetcha hanging. Emergency services reached the scene, but she was already unresponsive. Police confirmed her death and sent the body to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem.
Swetcha lived in Ram Nagar with her mother and daughter. She previously worked with TV9 and other Telugu channels before joining T News. Known for her bold reporting, she earned a strong voice in the media community.
The Chikkadpally police registered a case and launched an investigation. Officers found no suicide note. They are reviewing her mobile data and communication records.
Swetcha’s father filed a complaint with police. He alleged foul play involving her live-in partner, Poornachander. According to him, Poornachander is closely associated with BRS Rajya Sabha MP Joginapally Santosh. He had also sought a BRS ticket from Khanapur in the last Assembly elections.
Police are verifying these claims. Sources said Swetcha had been in a relationship with Poornachander after her divorce. Her father’s statement, along with evidence from the scene, has raised suspicions. Her feet were reportedly touching the bed, which added to the doubts.
Friends and colleagues gathered outside Gandhi Hospital on Friday night. Many expressed disbelief. They described Swetcha as a fearless journalist who helped others through personal struggles.
The police continue to investigate the case from all angles. Final confirmation will depend on the post-mortem and forensic results.
