Tahawwur Rana’s extradition has been successful: Headed to Tihar Jail

The main suspect in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, arrived in India on a chartered flight Thursday. After his appeal against his extradition was denied by the US Supreme Court.


The flight carrying Rana reportedly touched down in India on Thursday at approximately 2:30 pm. To bring him to India, a multi-agency team had traveled to the United States. Rana’s final attempt to avoid extradition was unsuccessful. As the judges of the US Supreme Court denied his application, he was taken to India.

Who is Tahawwur Rana?
Rana, 64, is a Canadian native who was born in Pakistan and is linked to David Coleman Headley. A US citizen who was one of the primary conspirators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, also known as Daood Gilani.


26/11 Attack Details:
166 people were killed on November 26, 2008, when ten Pakistani terrorists went on the rampage and carried out a concerted attack on a Jewish center, two upscale hotels, and a railway station. After sneaking into Mumbai, India’s financial hub via the Arabian Sea.

The attack claimed the lives of Americans, Britons, and Israelis. The only terrorist from the Pakistani cell still alive, Ajmal Amir Kasab, was hanged at Pune’s Yerawada Jail in November 2012.

Extradition Details:
Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised Rana’s extradition on Wednesday as a major victory for the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

High Security in Tihar Jail:
The sources said that all the arrangements have been made at the jail and that Tahawwur Rana is most likely to be housed in a high-security ward in Tihar Jail. Rana, 64, is a Canadian native who was born in Pakistan and is linked to David Coleman Headley, a US citizen who was one of the primary conspirators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, also known as Daood Gilani.

Special Prosecutor For Rana:
For three years from the date of this notification or until the trial of the aforementioned case is concluded. The Central Government assigns Narender Mann, an advocate, as Special Public Prosecutor. He is going to handle trials and other matters of the NIA case (against Tahawwur Hussain Rana and David Coleman Headley) on behalf of the NIA before the NIA Special Courts in Delhi and Appellate Courts.
