Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran Receives Knighthood – Chairman of Tata Group and Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran was conferred Honorary Knighthood by The United Kingdom on Friday for his exemplary services in strengthening the UK-India business relations. He was awarded “The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Civil Division) – honorary DBE/KBE“, a distinguished honorary civilian award given to foreign nationals. Tata Group announced this news on the X platform.
“I am deeply humbled by this prestigious recognition, for which I am grateful to His Majesty, King Charles. I would like to express how proud we are at the Tata Group to maintain such a strong strategic relationship with the UK across the technology, consumer, hospitality, steel, chemicals, and automotive sectors.” He further said, “We are incredibly proud of our iconic British brands like Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley. We employ more than 70,000 people in the UK. We enjoy fruitful and world-class research and academic partnerships with great institutions in the UK, which include the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics, the University of Warwick, and the University of Swansea,” Mr Chandrasekaran said.
“I would also like to express, on behalf of the Tata Group, my deep thanks to HM Government for their support for the Group. It is a strong and enduring relationship, and I look forward to strengthening our presence in the UK further,” Mr Chandrasekaran added.
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, prominently known as Chandra, is the current Chairman of Tata Sons. He was appointed as Chairman after a prolonged career of 30 years career at TCS. He joined the Board of Tata Sons in October 2016. He chairs the Boards of Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Air India, and many more.
A first non-Parsi, Chandrasekaran led the Tata Group to great heights. Under his leadership, Tata Group has ventured into multiple businesses. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Sciences from the Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, and earned his Master of Computer Applications (MCA) from the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli in 1986. Soon after his studies, he joined TCS in 1987 and served as COO and executive director of TCS before taking over as CEO in 2009.
Some of the foreign nationals awarded British awards in 2024 are Dagmar Dolby Co-founder, Ray and Dagmar Dolby Family Fund,
Eric Schmidt, Former CEO and Chairman of Google, Jason Furman, Professor of Economics, Harvard University, Rajinder Dhatt, Founder Member, Undivided Indian Ex-Servicemen’s Association; and a few others.
Besides Honorary Knighthood, Chandrasekaran was honored with France’s highest civilian award, “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur” (Knight of the Legion of Honour) in 2023.
