Telangana Liquor Price Hike: Govt Issues New Circular for Alcohol Rates

Telangana Liquor Price Hike:
The Telangana government has taken a major decision to increase liquor prices across the state. The change was announced through an official excise department circular on May 18, 2025.

Telangana Liquor Price Hike:

As per the new rates:

Quarter bottle prices are up by ₹10
Half (off) bottle prices are increased by ₹20
Full bottle prices are increased by ₹40

This price hike comes during the hot summer season when liquor demand is usually high. This move is expected to bring the government additional revenue of about ₹2,000 crore annually.

Earlier, the government had already increased beer prices. Now, with the liquor price hike, officials say they considered the suggestions of the price committee and liquor companies. A detailed report was prepared by the Excise Commissioner and submitted to the government last month.

The current liquor supply contracts with private companies will end on June 30, 2025. A new agreement will begin from July 1. The government wants to finalize new deals with distilleries, distributors, and supply companies before that date.

However, officials have raised concerns. Telangana already has higher prices for cheap liquor compared to neighboring states. Any further increase might encourage illegal transport of fake and non-duty paid liquor from other states. To avoid this, the Excise Commissioner has suggested keeping cheap liquor rates stable.

Another option under consideration is to sell liquor in tetra packs like in Karnataka. This could reduce the price of a quarter bottle by ₹15–₹20.

The report submitted to the government proposes two pricing slabs and suggests raising prices only on three categories of liquor, keeping cheap liquor unchanged. Legal concerns were also reviewed, and the government made sure the price changes are within the law.
