Telangana’s Chapata Chilli Gets GI Tag, Farmers Set for Big Gains

Telangana’s Chapata Chilli: Telangana’s Chapata Chilli is a unique variety grown in the rural areas of the Warangal district. For nearly 80 years, local farmers have been cultivating this chilli using their own seeds. It has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Because of this official recognition, there will be increase in its demand worldwide.


What Makes Telangana’s Chapata Chilli Special?

Chapata Chilli, also known as Tomato Chilli, stands out for its bright red color and mild spiciness. It has an oleoresin content of 6.37% to 6.75% making it a preferred ingredient in international foods, cosmetics, drinks and medicines. Due to its unique properties, the chilli is in high demand in China, the UK, the US, Germany and other European countries.

Cultivation and Expansion:

Initially, farmers in Nadikuda Mandal of Warangal grew this variety. Over time, they started sharing seeds with other farmers in Warangal and Karimnagar districts, expanding cultivation. With favorable weather conditions and a strong market demand more farmers have started growing Chapata Chilli.


The Timmapeta Chilli Farmers’ Association in Duggondi Mandal played a crucial role in obtaining the GI tag. With over 300 farmers involved, their collective efforts have brought global recognition to this variety.

Economic Impact on Farmers:

Currently, about 20,000 farmers across Hanumakonda, Warangal, Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Mulugu cultivate Chapata Chilli over 6,738 acres.

Meanwhile, the GI tag will boost demand and increase profits for farmers.

-The current market price for Chapata Chilli is ₹300 per kg.

-After the GI certification, prices will rise to ₹450-₹500 per kg.

– Farmers can now brand and export their produce directly to different states and countries.

Telangana’s Chapata Chilli:

With international recognition, Chapata Chilli is set to become a premium agricultural product from Telangana. The GI tag will help in promoting exports and improving farmer’s incomes. Additionally, the introduction of branding and packaging will further strengthen the global market for this unique chilli variety.
