Telangana’s New Education Reform: Pre-Primary Courses in Govt Schools

Telangana’s New Education Reform: The Telangana government is planning new reforms in the education system. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is focusing on these changes including the introduction of a pre-primary system from this year. The government is also studying whether any other states have similar models in place.

Telangana’s New Education Reform:

The Telangana government is considering introducing a pre-primary system in government schools starting from the 2025-26 academic year. The plan includes adding courses like Nursery, Lower Kindergarten and Upper Kindergarten similar to what private and corporate schools offer. The aim is to match the standards of private schools in government schools.

Introduction of Pre-Primary Courses

The Young India Police School was inaugurated in Manchirevula, Hyderabad, where Chief Minister Revanth Reddy shared the plan for pre-primary courses. He emphasized that the government is working on implementing pre-primary classes in all public schools before primary education begins. The Education Commission led by retired IAS officer A.K. Murali, recently recommended this change.

The government discussed these proposals in a high-level meeting with senior officials including Education Secretary Yogitha Rana and Education Director Narasimha Reddy.

Pilot Project and Future Plans

The senior official in the Education Department clarified that the implementation of pre-primary courses will not be rushed. A pilot project will begin next academic year in one or two schools in each of the 594 mandals (revenue blocks) in Telangana. If successful, the program will be extended across the state.

The government is also researching models in other states. For example, Andhra Pradesh’s YSR Congress Party government introduced pre-primary sections in public schools in 2022, though they were later handed over to anganwadi centers.

Addressing Key Issues in Education

During the inauguration, CM Revanth Reddy discussed key issues in the education system. He pointed out the lack of clarity in primary education in Telangana and explained that introducing pre primary courses was a necessary step. He also emphasized the need to bridge the gap between admissions in private and public schools. There are 30 lakh students in 11,500 private schools, while only 18.5 lakh students are enrolled in 29,000 government schools.

Revanth Reddy mentioned that government schools only accept children aged five years or older, while private schools start with nursery classes. This has led many parents to prefer private schools. He added that despite better-qualified teachers in government schools, the enrollment numbers are low due to the lack of early education options.
