1. The Treasure of Captain Kidd
William Kidd, the notorious Scottish buccaneer, was hanged in 1701 for murder and piracy. Prior to his arrest, he was supposed to have cached a huge amount of gold and treasures. Although some of it was unearthed, most of the treasure of Kidd—allegedly buried somewhere along the East Coast of the United States or the Caribbean—is lost to date.
2. The Lost Inca Gold of Peru
When Spanish conquistadors took the Inca Emperor Atahualpa hostage in 1532, a ransom of gold and silver was guaranteed. But before the ransom was given in full, the emperor was put to death. The rest of the gold was supposedly stashed away by the Incas within the Andes Mountains. Although numerous searches were conducted, the fabled treasure was never discovered.
3. The Amber Room of Russia
Built in the 18th century, the Amber Room was a stunning room covered completely in amber panels, gold leaf, and mirrors. It was looted by the Nazis during World War II and shipped off to Königsberg (today Kaliningrad). It disappeared after the war. Its destiny is one of the most famous art mysteries of the modern era.
4. The Treasure of the Flor de la Mar
The Flor de la Mar was a 16th-century Portuguese vessel that transported a vast treasure in tribute from the Sultan of Malacca. The vessel sank during a storm off the coast of Sumatra. The wreckage and its alleged cargo of gold, diamonds, and jewels—placed by some as high as billions—are still lost.
5. The Confederate Gold
After the American Civil War, Confederate troops allegedly secreted away millions of dollars’ worth of gold so it would not fall into Union forces. Speculation as to its whereabouts include Georgia lakes and hidden vaults in Virginia. No proven discovery has ever been made.
