Beer to Elephant: A Spanish tourist is under investigation for pouring beer down an elephant’s trunk at a wildlife sanctuary in Kenya. A video of him pouring beer down an African elephant’s trunk and feeding carrots to rhinos went viral on social media. He later removed the video from his social media account after facing severe criticism, but the video had already been shared by many others. Meanwhile, Kenya has announced an investigation against him for drugging wildlife.
The videos were shared by a tourist group called @skydive_kenya, which promotes wildlife tourism in Kenya. The man is seen drinking a can of beer in front of a large African elephant. Meanwhile, the elephant, which has smelled the beer, extends its trunk towards the beer can. At this time, the man can be seen pouring the remaining beer down the elephant’s trunk. Wildlife departments constantly warn that animals that have learned the taste of human food can become aggressive when they are no longer available. Therefore, all forest departments in the world warn tourists not to hand over food to wild animals. But when tourists ignore such warnings, they are committing cruelty to those animals. After the incident became controversial, the Ol Jogi Conservancy in Laikipia County, central Kenya, issued a statement. Although the incident took place last year, the controversy arose after the video was shared on Instagram.
On July 29, the wildlife sanctuary shared a statement on its Facebook page. In the statement, it pointed out that the tourist gave beer to Bupa, an elephant who has been living at Ol Jogi for many years, and that such actions are unacceptable, dangerous and contrary to the values of the institution. It added that they take such matters seriously and will ensure the welfare and protection of the animals. The BBC reported that Jogi Conservancy officials said that this should never happen in a protected forest area and that action would be taken.
