Trump Halts Harvard International Admissions: 788 Indians at Risk

Harvard International Admissions:

In a shocking move, the Trump administration has withdrawn Harvard University’s approval to enroll international students. This means that students from other countries, including the 788 Indians currently studying at Harvard, may be forced to leave or transfer to other universities in the U.S.

Harvard International Admissions:

The Department of Homeland Security, led by Secretary Kristi Noem, justified the decision citing national security concerns. The government accused Harvard of having links with the Chinese Communist Party and claimed the campus allowed antisemitism, violence, and support for extremist views. They also alleged that Harvard failed to protect Jewish students from threats and physical attacks.

Secretary Noem shared on social media that enrolling foreign students is a privilege, not a right, and Harvard had failed to follow the rules. As a result, the university lost its Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification. The university has been given 72 hours to submit documents if it wishes to regain the approval.

Harvard strongly disagreed with the decision, calling it illegal and harmful. The university defended its commitment to welcoming students from over 140 countries, stating that international students enrich the academic community in the U.S.

This sudden action has created uncertainty for many students. Those who had just been accepted are unsure if they can ever attend, while current students are being told to transfer or face deportation.

A graduate student from Delhi, Rohit Sharma, expressed his distress, saying he had just started his second semester and was preparing for a summer research project when the news broke.

If Harvard does not meet the government’s conditions, students will need to find new schools, a difficult task given the tight academic calendar and limited scholarship opportunities. Some universities may try to help, but options are expected to be limited.

This development has left hundreds of Indian students in a state of confusion and anxiety about their future in the U.S.
