Trump Says Tariff Deadline is Flexible, Big Deal with India May Come Soon

Trump tariff deadline flexible:

US President Donald Trump recently said that the July 9 deadline for imposing new tariffs is not fixed. He mentioned that the US government can change the date depending on how trade talks go. Trump added, “We can do whatever we want. We can make the deadline shorter or longer.”

Trump tariff deadline flexible:

This means the US may delay or speed up the decision on applying higher taxes on goods imported from other countries. President Trump also said that America has already made a deal with China and he expects a big trade deal with India soon.

The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent supported Trump’s view. He said that deals could be made by Labour Day if talks go well. According to him the US is currently negotiating with 18 important trading partners, and they are also in talks with 20 more countries.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the July 8–9 tariff deadline is “not critical.” She explained that President Trump has full power to change these dates. If countries don’t want to negotiate, Trump could directly announce higher tariffs especially if it helps American workers and the economy.

Markets reacted positively to this flexibility. Stock prices went up as investors became hopeful that the trade talks would prevent any major problems.

Back in April, Trump introduced a plan to charge reciprocal tariffs on most imports. Countries had 90 days to talk before the new rules began. That 90-day period will end in early July. However deadline may now change.

In May, Trump had warned the European Union of even higher tariffs up to 50%, if they did not agree to better trade terms.

This approach has clearly indicated that the US is serious about making fair trade deals but is also open to giving other countries more time to negotiate.
