When there are heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, the former American President Donald Trump has said that the US is prepared to step in between the two countries. Trump has officially revealed that he will support India, if the war broke between India and Pakistan. But a few recent evidences that have come to light have revealed Trump’s hidden ties with Pakistan. His remarks have raised speculations on whether America is playing safe or indirectly battling for Pakistan.
After India’s Operation Sindoor, in which India had struck Pakistan and terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Trump spoke of the situation as “terrible” and asked both countries to “work it out.” He reiterated that the US has a good relationship with both countries and would like to see this situation resolved peacefully.
US Aid to Pakistan: A Strategic Move?
In spite of Trump’s diplomatic efforts, there have been reports suggesting that the US continues to financially and militarily assist Pakistan. This leaves one wondering if Washington is unintentionally funding Pakistan’s army while campaigning on a platform of peace.
India-Pakistan Relations: A Complex History
India and Pakistan are arch-enemies, with an array of terror incidents in Kashmir. India has remained strong against terrorism, while Pakistan has long been culpable of supporting terror organizations. Operation Sindoor after the recent attack on Pahalgam created more tension in the relations of the two countries.
Trump has consistently said that he “gets along with both countries” and wishes that they would resolve their differences peacefully. His initial condemnation of the Pahalgam attack and his direct appeal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately after the attack were interpreted as indications of Indian support.
Diplomatic Efforts and Global Reactions
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has talked to India’s and Pakistan’s leadership, calling for them to ease off. Experts, however, believe that the US might take a hands-off approach, considering it had higher priorities in other international conflicts.
Although Trump rhetoric implies an even-handed policy, ongoing US assistance to Pakistan is a betrayal of its sworn stance. The world holds its breath as tensions mount, speculating whether Washington will stand up for justice or play it safe again.
