TTD Plans Insurance:
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is thinking about providing insurance to all pilgrims visiting Tirumala. Every day, thousands of devotees visit the Tirumala temple for the darshan of Lord Venkateswara. But ensuring the safety of all visitors is always a challenge.
Recently, there were discussions within the TTD governing body and officials regarding insurance facilities for pilgrims. Though no official proposal has been made yet, the idea is still under consideration. The major question is whether it is practically possible to give insurance to lakhs of people visiting Tirumala daily.
Every day, around 70,000 to 80,000 devotees visit Tirumala. On weekends, holidays, or special occasions, this number crosses one lakh. If insurance is given to all these people, TTD will have to pay huge amounts as premium to insurance companies, which may put a financial burden on TTD.
Another concern is how to collect details from pilgrims. People visit Tirumala by different routes like the Alipiri steps, Srivari Mettu, and the ghat road. TTD will need to collect names, addresses, Aadhaar numbers, and mobile numbers of all pilgrims. This will require special software and additional staff.
While devotees with tickets, time-slot bookings, or recommendation letters can be easily identified, the challenge is with free darshan (Sarva Darshan) pilgrims who often don’t carry identification. Officials are discussing whether it is possible to provide insurance for these people too.
This idea of providing insurance gained momentum after the stampede-like situation in Tirupati earlier this year, which left several people injured and some dead. TTD had provided financial assistance to the affected families. After that incident, officials started seriously thinking about an insurance facility.
Currently, TTD is still in the planning stage. A detailed proposal will be prepared only after discussions with officials and governing board members. Once the plan is ready, government approval will also be needed. Everyone is waiting to see how far TTD will move forward with this plan, considering the financial challenges involved.
