H1B Visa Abuse:
The United States government has initiated at least 175 investigations into suspected misuse of the H-1B visa program. The move is part of an effort to protect American workers and ensure that companies are following fair hiring practices.
The US Department of Labor (DOL) announced that these investigations are part of a new initiative called Project Firewall, launched in September. The goal of this project is to make sure that companies do not give preference to low-paid foreign workers for technology and engineering jobs instead of hiring qualified Americans.
According to reports, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is personally certifying each of these investigations. She stated that the department is “using every available resource to stop H-1B visa abuse” and to protect American jobs.
The H-1B visa program allows US companies to employ foreign professionals in specialized fields such as IT, engineering, and healthcare. However, critics claim that some companies misuse the program to cut costs by hiring cheaper foreign talent, which can harm American job seekers.
Recently, the Labor Department released a social media campaign video accusing certain businesses of misusing the visa system. The video claimed that the “American Dream” was being “stolen” from young Americans due to such abuse. The campaign also pointed out that India remains the largest beneficiary of the H-1B visa system.
Under the current administration, there has been a renewed focus on immigration reform and strict action against companies that do not comply with visa rules. The Department of Labor stated that it is determined to hold such companies accountable and “recapture the American Dream for the American people.”
This strong action reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring fair employment practices and safeguarding opportunities for American citizens in the job market.
