Uttarkashi Flash Floods: See the Before and After Impact

Uttarkashi Flash Floods: A large cloudburst hit the Dharali area near Harsil in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Tuesday, causing villages to be washed away and at least four people to be dead, and several others to be missing.


At least four individuals have reportedly died, according to preliminary reports, said Prashant Arya, the district magistrate for Uttarkashi. According to the Uttarkashi Police, “reports of damage in Dharali have prompted police, SDRF, army, and other disaster response teams to engage in relief and rescue operations at the site” because of the rising water level of Kheer Gadh in the Harsil area.

Unsettling images of the cloudburst surfaced, depicting homes being carried away by the flood’s force. Rajesh Panwar, a villager, informed the media that rushing waters might have carried away 20–25 hotels and homestays. He also said the wreckage might have buried 10–12 people. Torrential downpours have devastated Uttarakhand this monsoon. They have caused powerful currents to surge through flooded rivers. On Sunday, two people drowned in a flooded stream in Bhujiyaghat. On Monday, another person was swept away by strong currents in the Bhakhra stream near Haldwani.

The state emergency operation center reported that an overnight landslide in Rudraprayag buried two stores under rocks and debris that rolled down the mountainside. As the rains continued across the state, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed all District Magistrates to stay at ground zero with their full teams on Monday.

Dhami directed officials to take immediate action to restore blocked roads due to heavy rainfall. He also ordered them to prepare for quick restoration of power and drinking water services if damaged. To tackle waterlogging, the chief minister asked officials to prepare complete plans and backup strategies in advance.
