Vatican Chooses ‘Hot Priests’: The Vatican is set to recruit ‘hot priests’ with social media followings to attract a new generation to Christianity. The Vatican is reportedly planning to use social media to help curb the decline in the number of Christians worldwide and to bring a new generation to the faith. More than 1,000 priests and nuns have been invited to Rome for the event.
The number of Catholics worldwide, especially in Europe and the US, has fallen sharply in recent years. The Telegraph reports that individuals such as Father Giuseppe Fusari, a bodybuilding priest from Brescia, Italy, has been invited to the unusual event. He has more than 60,000 Instagram followers. Fr. Fusari believes that social media has a great potential to bring people closer to the Church. The 58-year-old often shares pictures of his tattooed limbs on social media, along with his spiritual thoughts. This attracts a younger audience. Fr. Fusari’s fans are mostly between the ages of 25 and 55.
Another priest invited in this way, Father Cosimo Schenna, has been described as the most beloved priest in Italy. His online presence has helped his congregation double in size. The 46-year-old has more than 454,000 followers on Instagram. Through his social media account, he shares gospel teachings along with requests for pet adoptions.
Father Ambrogio Massa, known for his guitar playing and biking lifestyle, is also part of this new generation of digital evangelists. He has over 460,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok. Fr. Massa is known for his selfies that combine faith and fun. His selfies are filled with comments like ‘beautiful’.
The late Pope Francis said that social media plays a big role in reaching out to the global community. His successor, Pope Leo XIV, is known for his strong online presence. He has about 19 million followers on social media. Before this, in 2022, the Vatican released a calendar featuring attractive Roman priests. More than 75,000 copies of the calendar were sold that year. The Vatican hopes that the new move will bring a new generation around the world to the path of faith of the Church.
