Donald Trump has teased a major trade agreement with India, calling it a “very big one.” Speaking at the ‘Big Beautiful Event’ at the White House, the former US President revealed the deal could follow shortly after a new agreement with China.
He made it clear: only select countries will get deals. “We’re not going to make deals with everybody,” Trump stated, hinting at a strategic shift in American trade policy.
The US and India recently held four days of closed-door negotiations in Washington. The talks aimed to unlock market access, cut tariffs, and resolve non-tariff barriers. On the US side, the delegation was led by the Office of the US Trade Representative. India’s team came from the Commerce Ministry under the leadership of Rajesh Agrawal.
The discussions aim to expand bilateral trade from the current $190 billion to a targeted $500 billion by 2030.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that India is working toward a balanced, fair trade agreement. He emphasized mutual benefit and long-term growth. The groundwork was laid during Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump’s meeting in February 2025.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also signaled progress. He recently stated that both sides are close to finalizing terms acceptable to both economies.

Trump has already signed a separate trade pact with China. The new deal includes an agreement to fast-track rare earth exports and sets a framework for future cooperation under the Geneva agreement. The China deal adds urgency and context to the India negotiations.
With both India and the US eyeing economic dominance, this trade deal could redefine global commerce. Trump’s public signal confirms momentum. All eyes are now on Delhi and Washington.
