Fact Check: Viral Video Misidentified as Navy Officer’s Final Moments

Fact Check: A viral social media video, wrongly claimed to show Lieutenant Vinay Narwal and his wife Himanshi Sowami dancing before the Pahalgam terror attack, has turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. The 19-second clip features a couple dancing to the popular Coke Studio song “Jhol” in the scenic Baisaran Valley of Kashmir. Several blogs falsely described it as the Lieutenant’s “last video” with his wife before the tragic April 22 attack in Pahalgam, which claimed his life.

Couple Behind Viral Video: “We Are Alive”

Travel influencers Yashika Sharma and Ashish Sehrawat have stepped forward to set the record straight. Speaking to media, the couple confirmed they were the ones in the video. Sehrawat said they filmed the video in Kashmir on April 14 and even shared a screenshot of the metadata to support his claim. The video, coincidentally uploaded on April 22—the same day as the attack—sparked confusion and was later taken down following backlash. In a follow-up post, Ashish and Yashika reassured everyone of their safety and stated clearly, “We are alive.”

Take a Look At Their Statement:

“Hey everyone, we’re still here and want to talk about a recent video we uploaded. Unfortunately, it attracted a lot of hate and we had to take it down. Many websites and news outlets wrongly claimed it was the final footage of the late Vinay Sir and his wife,” the couple explained in the caption.

In their fact-check video, Sharma clarified, “We weren’t involved in that incident. But I don’t know how or which media outlet picked it up—somehow, our video ended up going viral on all the news channels.” “Hum uss incident mei nahi the but I don’t know how, kaun si media ne, kahan se saare news channels pe sirf humari video viral ho rakhi hai.”

Influencers Hit Back at Media:

“We’ve been struggling since morning, but I honestly don’t understand how the Indian press works. ‘Mujhe nahi pata hai India ki press kaise chalti hai but hum log subah se bohot pareshaan hai.’ We are alive, but please accept our heartfelt condolences to the family,” she said.

The couple shared screenshots of prominent Indian media outlets that falsely identified them as late Navy Commander Vinay Narwal and his wife. “Our deepest condolences to the family. Please help by reporting any pages misusing our video. It’s shocking to see even respected news channels using unverified content just for views, making it hard to trust the media anymore,” they wrote in their caption.
