Visa-free U.S. travel: Policies, Exceptions and ESTA Provisions

The Visa Waiver Program of the United States provides the advantage of convenient travel for people of 41 specially designated nations so that they may visit America for up to 90 days visa-free. Visa-free U.S. travel is a new facility of short-term entry is available for visiting the country on a visit for tourism or business or on transit and does not require going to the embassy or attending a visa interview.

Some of the qualifying countries include the likes of the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, South Korea, Japan, France and Singapore. Romania is now the latest member to join this exclusive club, which will be eligible come March 2025. Citizens of these countries have the privilege of hassle-free entry, provided some requirements are met.

ESTA authorization required

While the VWP excludes visa requirements, visitors must obtain the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before leaving. The ESTA is an electronic application which can be made by going to the U.S. It is run by Customs and Border Protection and is a pre-screening process. Applicants must submit their application at least 72 hours before they leave, and the approval is usually valid for two years or until the passport expires.


Eligibility Criteria To have visa-free travel, visitors must meet some conditions, which are: – Having an electronic passport with a biometric chip. – Limiting their visit to 90 days or less for reasons such as tourism, meeting or business negotiations. – Having a valid onward or return ticket. – Adhering to all legal and security requirements.

Exceptions to the Program Not everyone from VWP countries is eligible to travel visa-free. Limitations are put on individuals who have visited Iran, North Korea or Syria subsequent to specific dates, and people of dual nationality residing in countries subject to proscription. Such visitors must apply for a routine B-1 (business) or B-2 (visitor) visa. Important Points
