Pollachi Sexual Assault Case: This case is one of the horrifying cases that shook Tamil Nadu apart. The Pollachi Sexual abuse and extortion case is a systematic sexual abuse and blackmail of numerous young women. Many perpetrators are involved in this case, and apart from this, there is a political angle involved in this case.

Case Update:

Today, a Tamil Nadu court convicted all nine men accused of sexually assaulting and blackmailing several women in Pollachi. Judge R Nandhini Devi found them guilty of repeated rape and gang rape. The court will announce the sentence at noon. The prosecution has requested life imprisonment for all the convicted men.

Thirunavukarasu, 34, T Vasantha Kumar, 30, M Sathish, 33, R Mani alias Manivannan, P Babu, 33, Haron Paul, 32, Arulanantham, 39, and Arun Kumar, 33 are the prisoners. Sabarirajan, also known as Rishwanth, is 32 years old. Since their arrest in 2019, they have been housed at Salem Central Prison.

What happened in the case:
On February 12 of this year, her friend Sabarirajan got in touch with Priya (name changed), a 19-year-old college student in Pollachi. He said he wanted to talk to her alone about something serious. Priya was invited to meet Sabarirajan, also known as Riswandh, at a Pollachi bus station.

In the afternoon, when Priya reached the bus stop, Sabarirajan and his friend Thirunavukkarasu, whom she also knew, were standing close to a car. They said they would discuss on the way and asked her to get into the car. While Sabarirajan and Priya sat in the back seat, Thirunavukkarasu took the wheel.

Abruptly, two other men, Sathish and Vasanthkumar, entered the vehicle. The four men then forcibly undressed Priya and recorded the assault on video. They also stole her gold chain. They threatened to post the video online if she didn’t give them money or sexual favors. After the assault, they abandoned her in the middle of the road and drove off while she cried and screamed. Distraught and afraid, Priya chose not to tell her family about the incident.

Victim Revealed to Family:

However, Priya chose to confide in her family after the men repeatedly tried to extort money from her and blackmailed her. Her brother Subhash (name changed) tracked down Thirunavukkarasu and Sabarirajan, assaulted them, and uncovered what appeared to be a complex and disturbing network of sexual violence and extortion. He and his associates retrieved cell phones from the two men and found videos of at least three other women whom they may have blackmailed. The family handed this evidence over to the Pollachi police, along with a complaint of robbery and sexual harassment.

Police FIR:

Under sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (assault or use of criminal force against woman with intent to disrobe), and 394 (robbery) of the IPC; section 66E of the IT Act (violation of privacy); and section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Sexual Harassment of Women Act (sexual harassment), the police filed a formal complaint against Sabarirajan, Thirunavukkarasu, Sathish, and Vasanthkumar on February 24.

Four Main Accused:
In Pollachi Sexual Abuse case, Sabarirajan, also known as Riswandh, is a 25-year-old civil engineer. The financier Thirunavukkarasu is 26 years old. Thirunavukkarasu employs Vasanthakumar to collect money from customers. Sathish is the proprietor of a Pollachi ready-made clothing store.
