Elon Musk unveiled XChat, a redesigned direct message (DM) interface inside the X app (formerly Twitter), to transform how people connect on the platform. The feature promises a smooth and secure texting experience and aims to compete with popular messaging services like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Instagram Direct.
Musk announced the new interface in an X post on Sunday, highlighting its advanced features such as cross-platform audio/video calls, end-to-end encryption, and disappearing messages. With these improvements, it could quickly become a major player in the crowded instant messaging market.
What is XChat?
The new messaging system completely redesigns the current setup, even though X already offered a direct messaging feature. The team is beta testing the revised interface with a select group of users and plans a broader release later this week. Musk claims the system uses a “whole new architecture” to enhance privacy by applying what he calls “Bitcoin-style encryption.” However, this description has sparked controversy and raised security concerns since Bitcoin’s underlying technology isn’t typically described as encrypted.
XChat offers modern communication features like voice and video calls, file sharing, encrypted messaging, and disappearing messages. This update aligns with Musk’s plan to transform X from a microblogging site into a multifunctional communication hub.

Who can access XChat?
The company is currently testing this feature with a small user base and plans to give paid X subscribers first access, likely reserving premium features for this tier. The company has not yet decided whether it will release a limited version for free users. As X aims to become a one-stop platform for social networking and messaging, observers will watch closely to see how XChat performs against established competitors that offer similar features for free.
