Officials suspect Changur Baba, 78, also known as Jalaluddin Shah, of targeting women from other communities for religious conversions. They claim he even maintained a “rate list” for each conversion. People commonly refer to a person with six fingers as a “changur,” and reports say Jalaluddin had six fingers himself.
Changur hails from Rehra Ma village in the Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh. He started by selling rings and amulets on a bicycle before eventually becoming the village chief. In the past, he allegedly lured widowers by offering financial help, promises of rewards, and even marriage, all in exchange for converting their religion.
