Who Is Scott Bessent?: The Banker Who’s Richer Than Elon Musk

Scott Bessent: This year, the White House witnessed two unusual events. A Republican who is openly gay was appointed head of the US Treasury Department. That same person, Scott Bessent, also got into a physical altercation with Elon Musk, the world’s richest man. Their clash ultimately led to Musk’s fallout with Donald Trump. The fight broke out in the West Wing after a heated Oval Office argument, where both Musk and Bessent urged Trump to let them oversee the IRS.

After the meeting, Bessent accused Musk of being a “total fraud” for failing to keep his promise to cut spending. MAGA supporter Steve Bannon said Musk responded by slamming his shoulder into Bessent’s ribcage “like a rugby player.” Onlookers quickly stepped in to break up the brief scuffle. After hearing about the incident, Trump reportedly said it was “too much.” Security then escorted Musk out of the West Wing.

Who is Scott Bessent?
Scott Bessent became the first openly gay Treasury Secretary in a Republican administration and the first openly LGBTQ Cabinet member confirmed by the Senate. After graduating from Yale, he built a prestigious career in finance. He worked at Kynikos Associates, the Olayan Group, and Brown Brothers Harriman before entering public service. He has consistently supported, encouraged, and mentored initiatives focused on financial education and literacy.

He supported key pillars of Trump’s economic agenda, including tax cuts, business deregulation, and tariffs on major U.S. trading partners. On November 22, Trump announced Bessent’s nomination and praised him as “a strong advocate of the America First Agenda.”

Despite Trump’s endorsement, conservatives remained skeptical of Bessent. Elon Musk, who was selected to co-lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, criticized Trump’s initial consideration of Bessent. Musk said, “Bessent is a business-as-usual choice,” and added, “We need change in some way because business-as-usual is driving America bankrupt.”
