Why Did Kunal Kamra Move Bombay High Court?

Kunal Kamra Move Bombay High Court: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has been in the news for some time. Now, Kunal Kamra has knocked on the door of the Bombay High Court, which has brought the comedian back into the headlines. Kunal has demanded that the High Court cancel the FIR registered by Mumbai Police. Let’s know what the whole matter is.

Why Bombay High Court?

Kunal Kamra had allegedly made a ‘traitor’ comment on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in a stand-up comedy show. After this, the workers of the Shiv Sena Shinde faction created a lot of ruckus. At the same time, Kamra has now approached the High Court in this matter and has demanded the cancellation of the FIR registered by Mumbai Police.

Kunal reached the Bombay High Court

Kunal filed a petition in the High Court on 5 April 2025. Advocate Meenaz Kakaliya argued on his behalf that the complaints filed against him violate his fundamental rights. These include freedom of speech and expression, the right to choose a profession, and the right to life and liberty, which are guaranteed in the Constitution of India. The matter is likely to be heard on April 21 before the bench of Justice Sarang Kotwal.

What is the whole matter?

Kunal Kamra had taunted Eknath Shinde in one of his shows without naming him. He had changed a song from the film Dil To Pagal Hai and used the word ‘traitor’ in the revised version. Furthermore, he made fun of Shinde’s rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray. Angered by this comment, Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel had filed a complaint against the comedian. After this, Mumbai Police had registered an FIR against Kunal under sections 353 (1) (B) and 356 (2) of the Indian Penal Code yesterday.

The police summons not been responded to yet

Mumbai Police has sent summons to Kunal thrice so far for questioning. But he has not yet appeared to record his statement. Kunal is a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu, and last month he obtained interim transit anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court in this case. Now he is demanding that the Bombay High Court quash this FIR completely.
