Nancy Tyagi, the Delhi-based fashion content creator who rose to overnight fame after her DIY red carpet appearances at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, is now at the center of controversy. While her rise was initially celebrated as a powerful grassroots success story, recent revelations have cast doubt on the authenticity of her narrative and ethics.
Nancy Tyagi made headlines for designing and stitching her Cannes outfit from scratch. However, singer Neha Bhasin publicly questioned this claim, stating that the corset worn by Nancy was nearly identical to one she had purchased earlier from The Source Bombay, a premium fashion store. Screenshots and receipts circulating online suggest that Nancy purchased the corset for ₹25,000, contradicting her statements about making the ensemble entirely by hand.
Though Nancy may have crafted the cape and skirt portions of the look, falsely attributing outsourced elements to her own skill has caused many to question her credibility.
Another layer to the controversy involves allegations from small business owners who claim Nancy ordered customized pieces from them and passed them off as her own creations. Several fashion entrepreneurs shared instances where they supplied garments or design elements without receiving credit.
One such report details how a small brand provided her with an entire base garment, expecting a tag or mention, but Nancy didn’t mention the brand nor tagged them.
The controversies don’t stop there. Several Reddit threads and online testimonies accuse Nancy of ghosting brands after receiving free products, without acknowledging or promoting them as agreed. In some cases, items were reportedly returned damaged. These actions have raised ethical concerns and reflect poorly on the collaborative culture that influencers often rely on.
What began as a Cinderella story now raises important questions about authenticity and accountability in influencer culture. While Nancy’s talent and creativity are not entirely in doubt, the lack of transparency and alleged exploitation of small brands has marred her image.
As social media continues to amplify voices, the pressure to remain honest and respectful in the creator economy has never been higher, especially for those who build careers on the backs of DIY and grassroots narratives.
