Woman Sets Apartment on Fire Trying to Kill Cockroach, Neighbour Dies

A young woman accidentally ignited a deadly fire in South Korea while attempting to exterminate a cockroach in her home. The incident took place in the city of Osan, and this strange occurrence has drawn the entire nation’s attention. This flashpoint resulted in a neighbour’s death.

The Dangerous Method

The young woman employed a method of pest control that was noticeably great danger. She was utilizing a lighter – alongside flammable aerosol spray – as a dangerous form of flamethrower or blow torch on the insect, consequently the fire grew extremely quickly and she lost all control of the fire, it eventually ignited several things situated in and around that household.

A Rapidly Spreading Blaze

The very small fire quickly grew into a much larger fire within moments, which then engulfed her entire apartment unit and then expanded further throughout the residential building, resulting in thick organic smoke building up in stairwells and adjoining gaps. This ordeal presented a most dangerous scenario for residents trapped in their homes.

A Neighbour’s Tragic Death

There was a family event with four residents on the fifth floor, consisting of a woman, her husband, and their two-month-old infant. They were quickly overwhelmed by smoke obstructing their primary means of escape, they ultimately made a decision to pass over their infant to a neighbour situated on an adjacent building beyond a narrow gap between buildings.

A Desperate Attempt to Escape

The husband made it safely to the next building. Then the wife tried to follow her husband across. Unfortunately, while doing this desperate escape attempt, she fell. Rescuers took her to a nearby hospital. Hours later, she died from her injuries.

The Aftermath and Injuries

The commercial/residential building contained more than thirty units. The fire destroyed the building. At least eight individuals were treated for smoke inhalation injuries. The fire shocked and devastated a community.

Legal Consequences

Local police are investigating the incident and plan to obtain a warrant for the woman. She is facing serious criminal charges for her actions, including death by negligence and starting a dangerous fire.

A Public Notice about Online Trends

This tragedy serves as a cautionary tale of a dangerous social media trend. Extreme pest control techniques are often glorified across social media. These videos typically feature someone taking a large blowtorch to kill an insect. Similar to an occurrence in Australia in 2018, a man set his own kitchen on fire to kill a cockroach with a homemade flamethrower.

Another Dangerous Approach

Another insecticide incident occurred in Japan last year. A man found a cockroach in his apartment in Kumamoto, and he sprayed it with a large amount of insecticide to kill it. After about one minute, there was a powerful explosion. The explosion blew the windows out of his balcony. The resident had a minor injury from the explosion.
