Adolescence: Why all the celebrities and directors are talking about this Netflix series

Stephen Graham stars in the four-part limited series Adolescence on Netflix, which has enthralled both viewers and reviewers. Its captivating narrative, breathtaking photography, fluid direction, and potent performances have all received accolades from filmmakers and actors like Alia Bhatt, Hansal Mehta and Shekhar Kapur. What makes the series unique? Its distinct style: every episode is told in a single, uninterrupted shot.

Let’s now see what made all the top actors and directors talk about this.

Adolescence Story:

This is a psychological drama and a crime drama. This series plot revolves around a 13-year-old accused of the murder of a classmate, his family, therapist and the detective in charge are all left asking: what really happened?

Explaining this film, the co-creator Graham said, “One of our aims was to ask, ‘What is happening to our young men these days, and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media?”. According to the sources, it is said that the idea of this series came to graham after he heard about young boys involved in knife crimes.

What made the Series more engaging:
One-shot Approach: The director Barantini has thought of making this series more dramatic and immersive, so they shot every episode in one continuous take.

Continuing this Barantini said, “Basically, that means we press record on the camera and we don’t press stop until the very end of the hour.” Following to it he also said, “But it’s much more complicated than it sounds. It takes months of preparation, weeks of rehearsals, and an incredible team to pull it off at every stage, from the script to the locations to the production design to where exactly the camera is going to be able to shoot and from what angle.”

Celebrity Reviews:

Shekar Kapur said, “I’m not the first one to say this but #Adolescence from #Netflix redefines what truly great series can achieve. It defies the regular 3 act structure of cause and effect plunges you deeply into the minds of the characters and allows you to reflect upon yourself… It’s next-level storytelling. Watch it.”

Alia Bhatt has expressed her review through her Instagram. She said, “This show is truly perfection. From the writing to the staging to the EXCEPTIONAL cinematography…I wonder what it felt like when after an hour of calling action to finally called cut. How did their entire cast and crew feel..?

She added, “The performances by every person that has walked into frame and out was ALIVE..real raw and so hot at the moment that the energy is very very palpable and so moving”

In the conclusion she said. “The magic of storytelling and an entire crew coming together to deliver every department giving nothing but their heart and soul to every second on-screen…I’m in awe”

Following this Hasal Mehta has also responded to this series and shared his review with the audience.

Hansal Mehta said, “I was devastated by Adolescence on @netflix so much so that I had to write this follow-up post about it, particularly about the final two episodes, Episodes 3 and 4. They leave an impact beyond the procedural, outside any semblance of mystery, and beyond any genre-defined clic.”

He also added, “As a parent, it left me terrified, concerned, and introspective, all at once and for a long time to come. As a filmmaker, it made me look up in awe at the creators of this show, including the writers, director, actors, grips, gaffers, sparks, and so many others who made this absolute banger even possible. It left me envious, nervous, and energized (sic).”

In the conclusion, he said, “As a parent, it had me terrified. As a human being, it compelled me to look at people with greater empathy, to understand life with greater nuance, and to see beyond the black and white. I wanted to hug my kids. To tell them it’s alright. To tell myself I can do better. Adolescence is truly an achievement. Just give it every award this season already.”
