HBO Faces Backlash for Casting Italian Actress as Indian Character in ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot

Harry Potter HBO casting controversy:

HBO has announced a new Harry Potter series, but one casting choice has made many fans upset. Italian actress Alessia Leoni has been chosen to play the role of Parvati Patil, a character clearly described as Indian in the original books. This has led to strong reactions on social media, especially from Indian fans who expected a South Asian actress for the role.

Harry Potter HBO casting controversy:

In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, Parvati Patil and her twin sister Padma are among the very few Indian characters. In the original movies, these roles were also played by actresses of South Asian origin. Because of this, many fans were eager to see how HBO would represent these characters in the upcoming show. So, when HBO announced that Alessia Leoni — who is Italian — would play Parvati, it caused disappointment.

One user on Reddit wrote, “Have they just cast an Italian as one of the only Indian characters?” Another commented, “I’ll gladly delete this and eat my words if she is Desi, but with a name like Alessia Leoni, I don’t have much hope.” A Twitter (now X) user added, “Why cast an Italian who just looks brown? They could’ve picked an actual Indian actress. So much for diversity.”

Fans have also criticized the casting of Paapa Essiedu, a Black actor, as Severus Snape. In the books, Snape is described as pale and sallow. A Redditor said, “Black Snape and Italian Parvati? What the f***.”

Another comment suggested that HBO might be using these controversial choices to get more attention: “It’s good rage bait. Both sides are angry, so more people will talk about the show. If it gets too much, they can just replace both actors.”

Fans continue to question HBO’s casting decisions and whether they respect the cultural identities of the original characters.
