The New York Times reports that the former actor passed away on September 29. He died at one of his daughter’s residences close to Santa Barbara, California. USA TODAY was unable to get in touch with Ely’s reps for comment.
“The world has lost one of the greatest men it has ever known – and I have lost my dad,” Kirsten Ely wrote in a statement provided to Fox News Digital and in an Instagram post.
Ely, who was born in northern Texas, gained notoriety for his parts in television series like “The Aquanauts,” motion pictures like “The Night of the Grizzly,” and the action film “Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze” from 1975.
In addition to his work as an actor, he hosted the game program “Face the Music” during those two years. He also hosted the Miss America pageants in 1980 and 1981, replacing veteran presenter Bert Parks.
He was born in Hereford, Texas, on June 21, 1938. Before departing for California, he spent a year as a student at the University of Texas in Austin. He attended Amarillo High School in Potter County.
According to Kirsten Ely’s statement, anyone who knew her father would describe him as a hero and a “actor, writer, coach, mentor, family man, and leader.”
“He created a powerful wave of positive influence wherever he went. The impact he had on others is something that I have never witnessed in any other person – there was something truly magical about him. This is how the world knew him,” Kirsten Ely wrote.
“The strength and grace that I know he would want for me” is how she is with her grief, she continued, adding, and she is “picking up the pieces of my heart that feel like pieces of him.”
“My father’s life story was one of relentless perseverance, unending dedication to his family and friends, courage to do what was right, and willing sacrifice to facilitate the dreams of those he loved,” she stated. “It was also a story of joy and love – something everyone close to him had the privilege of experiencing. Once you knew my father’s love, the world grew to be a brighter and more meaningful place.”
