When the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) raided the Bengaluru home of Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who is currently in jail, they found a significant amount of gold and cash valued at crores of rupees. According to the authorities, the operation came after Rao was apprehended for smuggling 14.8 kg of gold at Bengaluru International Airport. Her luxurious apartment on Lavelle Road, where she allegedly paid Rs 4.5 lakh in rent, yielded Rs 2.67 crore in cash and Rs 2.06 crore in gold.
Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police (Police Housing Corporation), is the father of 32-year-old Ranya Rao. He however, put some distance between them, saying that they haven’t spoken since her nuptials four months ago. Police say the actress was arrested at the airport on Monday night after arriving on an Emirates flight from Dubai. A group of four DRI investigators arrived at the Bengaluru airport to await the accused actress’s arrival after learning that she had boarded the Emirates flight from Dubai.

Her frequent trips to Dubai, which included four visits in a single 15-day period, were being observed by the DRI. According to investigators, she used her DGP father’s name to avoid detection while smuggling gold bars hidden in her belt and clothes. She would contact the police after she landed, and they would come get her and take her home. The DRI is currently investigating whether she acted alone or if any police officers or an IPS official connected to her were involved in the gold smuggling operation.
Authorities are also looking into whether she has ever engaged in gold trafficking. After being arrested, she was brought to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru to be questioned. She was then brought before the court and placed under judicial custody. Ranya Rao has appeared in several South Indian films in addition to Maanikya, where she costarred with Kannada superstar Sudeep.
