DYK Suriya’s Blockbuster film Was Once Rejected by 12 Top Stars

Sometimes, stories that seem unimpressive at first can turn into massive blockbusters. One such example is the Tamil movie Ghajini starring Suriya. Surprisingly film was rejected by 12 leading actors before Suriya took it up. It went on to become one of the biggest hits in Indian cinema despite the rejections.

Before Suriya actors like Mahesh Babu, Ajith, Madhavan, Kamal Haasan, Vikram and Vishal were approached for the film. However they turned it down by doubting the hero’s character in the film and the storyline. Many actors felt that the concept of memory loss and revenge would not connect with the audience.

Unlike others, Suriya believed in the vision of director A.R. Murugadoss. He accepted the role and delivered a powerful performance. The story of a man with short term memory loss seeking revenge for his girlfriend’s murder has struck a chord with audiences. Suriya’s intense portrayal and the gripping screenplay made “Ghajini” a blockbuster.

After the success in Tamil, the film was dubbed into Telugu where it also became a massive hit. The Telugu audience welcomed Suriya’s performance and expanded his fan base. The movie was later remade in Hindi with Aamir Khan in the lead. The Hindi version too became a box-office success grossing over ₹200 crores.

Ghajini has established Suriya as a versatile actor and moreover it also expanded his market across languages. His performance was praised for its emotional depth and action sequences. Even today, “Ghajini” remains one of Suriya’s most memorable movies.

Meanwhile he is soon to be seen in Retro. Retro is an upcoming Indian Tamil language romantic action thriller film which is written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj. The film is produced by Stone Bench Creations and 2D Entertainment. The film stars Suriya and Pooja Hegde in the lead roles.

He will also be seen in film tentatively titled Suriya 45. The film directed by RJ Balaji who co-wrote the script with Rathna Kumar and produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. The film stars Suriya and Trisha Krishnan with Swasika, Indrans, Yogi Babu, Sshivada, Natty Subramaniam and Supreeth Reddy in key roles.
