Shubman Gill explains how captaincy helped his batting mindset

The Gujarat Titans will take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad with full confidence. The 2022 Indian Premier League winners lost their opening game of the season, but they have since recovered to defeat the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Before the match, captain Shubman Gill talked to the media and explained how his approach to the game as a batsman has improved since donning the captaincy hat. As a batsman, you should only play, he remarked. I believe that thinking about your other duties as captain prevents you from giving your best effort.

Gill Opens Up on Learning Curve After Hardik’s Exit

After Hardik Pandya left the team last year, Gill acknowledged that he had to deal with this issue after being forced to wear the captain’s armband. “There were times in last year’s IPL when I found myself overthinking and I couldn’t do well,” Gill remarked. However, head coach Ashish Nehra advised me not to combine my roles as captain and batsman as I began to learn more. This change in perspective has improved me.

Captaincy Challenges & Growth

With one century and two fifties to his credit, Gill amassed 426 runs at an average of 38.73 in 12 innings during the 2024 Indian Premier League. It was nevertheless a solid effort by Gill, even though he was unable to lead GT to glory the previous season and his numbers paled in comparison to his career-defining 2023 campaign.
