Samantha’s Citadel Spin-Offs: Amazon MGM Studios has officially cancelled the Indian and Italian spin-offs of the global spy thriller series Citadel. The Indian version, titled Citadel: Honey Bunny featured Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan. The Italian version Citadel: Diana, starred Matilda De Angelis. Despite high expectations, both shows failed to impress audiences globally.
Instead, the storylines from Honey Bunny and Diana will be combined into the second season of the main Citadel series. Vernon Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, stated that while the regional shows won’t move forward individually, their plots will be integrated into what he described as the “most exciting season” of the series yet. Filming for Season 2 has already wrapped, and it is expected to release in 2026 — a year later than previously planned.
Reports suggest the decision was influenced by the poor global performance of the spin-offs. The future of other potential regional spin-offs, such as Citadel: Mexico, is now uncertain, with production currently on hold.
There have also been concerns about the quality of Season 2. Insiders claim that studio executives are not fully satisfied with the outcome so far, especially following the departure of Jennifer Salke, the former Amazon executive who originally championed the series.
The first season of Citadel cost over $200 million for just six episodes, making it one of the most expensive TV shows ever made. While Amazon had hoped to create its own James Bond-style franchise with Citadel, the path forward now looks less clear.
Despite the setbacks, fans of the main series can still look forward to an action-packed second season in 2026.
