Is Nani transformation losing his core audience?

Is Nani transformation losing his core audience?

Nani transformation:

Once upon a time, when we thought of family heroes in Telugu cinema, the names that immediately came to mind were Venkatesh and later Nani. Starting from humble beginnings, Nani grew to become a Natural Star. In the past, Nani’s films were known to attract the entire family audience to the theaters. It was a belief that Nani’s films were safe for children to watch making him a favorite among family audiences.

Nani transformation:

In line with this, Nani’s movies were perfect family entertainers. He acted in many classic films like Aasta Chemma, Eega and Jersey justifying the tag of a Natural Star. Same as of Jagapathi Babu and Venkatesh, Nani’s name became synonymous with family friendly heroes. However, looking at the recent films Nani has been doing, one cannot help but wonder, what has happened to Nani?

With a desire to become a mass hero, the films he has been choosing lately seem to be running average at the box office but are disappointing his fans. Nani’s mass appeal started with Dasara but there was a strong sense of violence in that film. Just as the audiences were grappling with that, Nani came up with Saripoda Sanivaram another mass movie. And before we could recover from that, Hit 3 came along and raised questions about Nani’s transformation into a mass driven persona.

In Hit 3, there’s a line, “A man should never cross a line,” which is true. However, in the film, Nani crosses that line with excessive violent sequences leaving the family audience in shock. From the first scene to the last, the extreme violence raises the question: Why so much?

The movie itself is fine and Nani’s acting is remarkable but the violent scenes were over the top. Especially the climax, starting with the infant scene is difficult for sensitive viewers to handle. Just because the censor board gave the film a particular A certificate, does it justify such extreme violence? Many are beginning to question whether this is the right approach.

Once Arjun Reddy changed the course of Telugu cinema, bringing in the idea that heroes could use bad language. Now Nani seems to have taken this even further with Hit 3 where the hero might go to any extreme. Even though violence existed in Balakrishna and other mass hero’s films in the past, it was never as extreme as what we are seeing now.

Nani is an exceptional actor. Whether it’s class or mass, he can surely play any role to perfection. But when he delivers such outstanding performances, it’s hard to accept the extreme violence and senseless scenes. With Hit 3’s success, will Nani continue adding more violence to his future films like Paradise? Will he completely alienate his family audience and fan base, or will he come to his senses and recall the reputation he built in the industry? Only time will tell in the coming days.
