A Look Back at His Test Career
Rohit Sharma’s Test career lasted 11 years, where he played 67 games, making 4,302 runs with 12 centuries. Early on, he struggled to establish himself in the format, but his moment came in 2019, when he was given the role of opening batsman, and he performed phenomenally against South Africa and England. His captaincy of India in Tests yielded mixed results, including some big wins but also a 3-1 series defeat in Australia.
Rohit’s move follows a troubled season, during which he was out of form, recording just one fifty-plus score in his last 13 innings. His captaincy too came under the scanner after India lost the 0-3 home series to New Zealand. Close sources also indicate that the leaders were mulling a change in leadership before the England tour. And this lead to Rohit’s resignation.
What’s Next for Rohit Sharma?
Though Rohit is retiring from the Test cricket, he has committed to ODI cricket, with the assurance of the public to watch him on the field further. His earlier retirement from T20Is a year ago as captain after securing India a T20 World Cup win reinforces his emphasis on 50-over cricket.
Rohit Sharma’s retirement signifies the closing of an era for Indian Test cricket. His performances as a batsman and captain have created an indelible mark on the team. With India readying itself to face the series against England, the hunt for a new Test captain has commenced, while Rohit goes about his path in ODI cricket.
