Sleep only 4 hours:
Some people seem to function perfectly fine with only four to six hours of sleep each night. Scientists have now discovered that a rare genetic mutation might be the reason behind this. This mutation affects the body’s sleep-wake cycle and allows a person to get better quality deep sleep in less time.
Doctors usually recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep for adults. Not getting enough rest is linked to health problems like heart disease and memory loss. But this new research suggests that a few people, called “natural short sleepers,” do not suffer from such problems even with less sleep.
According to a study published in the journal PNAS, these natural short sleepers have a mutation known as SIK3-N783Y. This mutation helps their body perform all the regular night-time repair and rest processes in a shorter period.
Dr. Ying-Hui Fu, a neuroscientist from the University of California, explained that their bodies work more efficiently while asleep. In experiments on mice with the same gene mutation, scientists noticed the mice slept 30 to 50 minutes less than normal mice, even after being kept awake for a long time. The sleep they did get was deeper and more effective.
The study also found that this mutation changes how certain proteins in the brain function. These proteins are responsible for sending signals that control sleep. Because of this efficient brain activity, the person doesn’t feel tired even with fewer hours of sleep.
This discovery could help doctors in the future. It may lead to new treatments for people with sleep disorders or those who suffer from poor sleep quality.
In short, while most of us need a full night’s sleep, a rare group of people have a special gene that helps them feel well-rested with just four hours. Science is now trying to learn how this can help everyone sleep better.
