Drug Abuse in Malayalam Cinema: Producer Sandra Thomas has raised serious concerns about increasing drug abuse in the Malayalam film industry. In a recent interview, she revealed alarming details and called for stronger action.
Sandra said, “A special budget is being allotted exclusively for this. Even separate rooms are allotted for this purpose.” She claimed that drug usage has become more organized over time, and many people on film sets are aware of it but choose to stay silent. “No one acted because they still wanted to work with those involved,” she added.
According to her, producers often avoid complaints because it could delay their projects. “If someone is caught on the sets, the shooting gets stalled. It also ruins the goodwill of the actor,” she explained. Sandra questioned the silence of top industry figures and said, “Associations say the entire industry cannot be blamed just because of one or two people.”
She emphasized the need for more women in Internal Complaints Committees on film sets, saying this could help in faster justice. “Women producers in ICC can bring fairness and quicker action for victims of harassment,” she stated.
Sandra’s words have reignited the debate over drug culture in cinema. Her courage to speak out once again puts pressure on the industry to act.
