Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has landed in the middle of a language row after remarking that Kannada was born of Tamil. Kamal Haasan on Tamil-Kannada Debate, made in the launch of the audio of his forthcoming film ‘Thug Life’, attracted criticism from the pro-Kannada outfits and the Karnataka political leaders. Ignoring the criticism, Haasan has not apologized, claiming that he uttered the words out of affection.
At the event in Chennai, Haasan emotively spoke of his attachment to Tamil, declaring, “Uyire Urave Tamizhe” (My life and my family is Tamil). Speaking to Kannada actor Shivarajkumar, on the stage, he said, “Your language emerged out of Tamil, so you too are included.” Although this was viewed as a sign of cultural amalgamation by a section of people. Others viewed it as a slight on Kannada’s standalone linguistic tradition.
Backlash from Karnataka
Kamal Haasan’s comment rasied a storm in Karnataka Industry, with BJP leaders and pro-Kannada activists taking stand against his statement. Karnataka BJP President B Y Vijayendra characterized the statement as “uncultured” and “insulting”. And contended that Kannada has a 2,500-year-old independent history. Pro-Kannada organizations went to the extent of ripping down ‘Thug Life’ posters in Bengaluru and issued a warning to Haasan not to make any more remarks on Kannada.
In response to the controversy, Kamal Haasan explained that his statement was not intended to be offensive to anyone. He explained, “What I said was said out of love, and a lot of historians have taught me language history. I didn’t mean anything.” He added that politicians are not qualified enough to comment on linguistic history, underscoring that this should be reserved by historians and language experts.
Despite the on going criticism, Kamal Haasan took a stand on his words, saying, “Love will never apologize.” He also re confirmed his statement that Tamil Nadu has always been an open and inclusive state. He also stated a few examples of leaders from diverse backgrounds who have served as Chief Ministers.
Impact on ‘Thug Life’ Release
The furor has resulted in a demand for a boycott of Kamal Haasan’s next film ‘Thug Life’, which is scheduled to be released on June 5, 2025. Certain Kannada activists have demanded that Haasan should offer an apology before the movie is shown in Karnataka. Kamal Haasan’s comments have revived linguistic tensions between Tamil and Kannada speakers. Though he maintains that his comments were made out of affection, critics contend that they disempower Kannada’s independent identity.
