Air India Cancels Turkey Deal: India continues to take decisive action against Turkey following its support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. In the latest move, Air India has officially announced the termination of its maintenance agreement with Turkish Technik, a prominent aviation services company based in Turkey.
“If there’s any doubt about such a partnership, we will look at alternatives. Our aim is to respect public opinion,” said Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson, highlighting the government’s firm stance.
This decision is part of a broader diplomatic and strategic shift by New Delhi in response to Turkey’s military and political backing of Pakistan, especially in light of recent hostile incidents.
Previously, the security clearance of Turkish company Çelebi Aviation was revoked at nine major Indian airports, further tightening aviation cooperation between the two nations.
Turkey’s growing military partnership with Pakistan has raised serious concerns in Indian defense circles. Reports suggest that Turkish-made drones and military personnel were involved in operations against Indian interests during Operation Sindoor. This has sparked a nationwide #BoycottTurkey campaign, with travel agencies also halting bookings to Turkey.
While a few Air India Boeing 777s remain under repair in Turkey, Campbell Wilson stated that future maintenance and overhaul services will be shifted to alternative locations such as Abu Dhabi and Singapore.
“India currently lacks full aircraft maintenance capabilities, so we are exploring options in other countries,” Wilson explained.
“Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) handles some repairs domestically, but capacity constraints remain.”
Adding to Air India’s logistical challenges, Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian carriers following the Pahalgam terror attack. This has forced Air India to reroute several of its Europe and North America-bound flights, leading to up to 3 hours of additional travel time on some routes.
“Though costs are increasing due to longer flight paths, we are committed to maintaining non-stop services to most destinations,” Wilson added.
