CM Revanth Reddy gave a key update on the 2 new airports planned to be built in Telangana. He said that their construction work will begin soon. The CM, who unfurled the flag at the Parade Grounds as part of the Telangana Formation Day celebrations today , later addressed the people.
He said that his government is committed to the development of Telangana. Currently, Shamshabad Airport is the only one available in Telangana. That is why his government is ready to construct new airports. He revealed that after consultations and discussions with the Center, permissions have been obtained for the construction of Warangal (Mamunur) and Adilabad airports. He said that new airport work will be taken up soon in Warangal city and Adilabad town.
Meanwhile, there is currently an old airport in Mamunur in Warangal district. Built in 1930 during the Nizam’s era, this airport provided services until 1981. The government is ready to expand this airport. The state cabinet approved the new Mamunur airport on July 31, 2023. Later, it held several rounds of talks with the Center. With this, the Center gave the green signal for the construction of the Mamunur brownfield airport. There is already 696 acres of land within the airport area.
The Telangana government has allocated Rs 205 crore for the acquisition of 253 acres of land required for the expansion and is speeding up the work. The Roads and Buildings Department has written a letter to the Airport Authority to prepare a DPR with designs for the construction of the airport. The central government has decided to develop Mamunur Airport under the UDAN scheme. If this airport becomes available, it will also be convenient for the people of North Telangana, South Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.
The dream of setting up an airport in Adilabad is not new. There is a history of flights flying here before independence. During the Nizam’s era, an aerodrome was established on 369 acres of land in 1930 to refuel fighter jets. Locals have been demanding an airport for the development of the district for a long time. The central government recently granted permission for the Adilabad civil airport. State Minister Komatireddy Venkata Reddy said that the green signal has been received from the Indian Air Force (IAF) to this effect.
The Air Force has suggested that this airport be developed to accommodate the movement of civil aircraft and Air Force aircraft. Officials have suggested in the letter that the required land be handed over to the Airport Authority of India. Currently, there is 369 acres of land under the control of the Defense Ministry. Officials believe that if this is used for the establishment of the airport, there may be no need for additional land acquisition at this time.
