Kamal Haasan on Hindi Imposition:
Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has once again taken a firm stand against the imposition of Hindi in southern states, amid an ongoing language controversy. While promoting his latest film Thug Life, Kamal spoke out about the importance of respecting regional languages and not forcing one language over others.
“I stand with Karnataka, I stand with Andhra,” Kamal said, expressing his solidarity with South Indian states opposing Hindi imposition. He added, “Without imposition, we will learn. Don’t impose, because this is ultimately education and we must take the shortest route to education… and not put hurdles in its way.”
Kamal’s comments came at a time when he was under fire for a statement claiming that Kannada originated from Tamil. This led to backlash in Karnataka, and Thug Life was not released there. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) demanded an apology, which Kamal refused to offer. His production house approached the Karnataka High Court for protection, but the film’s release in the state was eventually halted.
Referring to his popular 1981 Hindi film Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Kamal reminded everyone that he has worked across languages. “I am the actor from Ek Duuje Ke Liye…,” he said, indicating his belief in India’s linguistic diversity.
Kamal also commented on the larger national debate surrounding the three-language policy in the National Education Policy (NEP). The DMK, ruling in his home state Tamil Nadu, has consistently opposed the policy, claiming that it favors Hindi over regional languages.
Kamal suggested that instead of imposing Hindi, the focus should be on practical languages for global use. “If you’re truly aiming for an international breakthrough, you must learn one language. English seems to be fair enough… You suddenly replace it and it’s all over again. You make many people illiterate, especially in Tamil Nadu,” he explained.
He also questioned, “What about the promises? What about my language? Am I not one of the 22 (official languages)?”
Despite the political storm and poor reviews, Thug Life has managed to collect ₹35 crore in its opening weekend in India. However, the absence of a release in Karnataka impacted its overall performance. Kamal Haasan’s stand continues to spark debate on the importance of linguistic respect and cultural inclusion in India.
