Over-Tourism in Europe: Why Locals Are Protesting and What Indian Tourists Should Know

Over-Tourism in Europe: Why Locals Are Protesting and What Indian Tourists Should Know

Planning a trip to Europe this summer? You may encounter more than just crowded attractions. Across Southern Europe, residents are protesting against overtourism and its impact on daily life.

Protests Erupt Across Southern Europe

Recently, residents in cities like Barcelona, Venice, Athens, and Genoa took to the streets in coordinated protests. Demonstrators used water pistols, marched with loud suitcases, and displayed banners demanding more sustainable tourism. Locals feel pushed out of their own homes due to rising rents, inflated prices, and an overdependence on short-term tourism profits.

In Barcelona, short-term rentals increased by over 50% in 2023, forcing many residents out of the city center. In Venice, a banner floated down a canal reading “STOP HOTEL = + CITTA,” protesting the conversion of public housing into tourist accommodations.

Paris and Lisbon Join the Movement

Paris is also witnessing protests against housing displacement. Demonstrators are calling for reduced rents and the requisition of empty houses to accommodate residents.

Similarly, in Lisbon, residents are voicing concerns over the proliferation of short-term rentals. An estimated 60% of housing units are now used for short-term rentals, leading to soaring rents and displacement of locals. Activists are advocating for policies to protect residents and preserve the city’s character.

Calls for Sustainable Tourism

Organizers emphasize that their fight is not against tourists but against investors and platforms like Airbnb that profit from the housing crisis. With international travel spending in Europe set to hit USD 838 billion this year, pressure is mounting on governments to act.

Cities are responding. Barcelona plans to remove all short-term rental licenses by 2028. Venice has introduced a tourist entry fee. Greece is considering bans on new rental licenses in key districts.

For travelers, experts recommend being respectful, avoiding over-crowded areas, supporting local businesses, and staying in eco-certified accommodations. As the world rethinks how tourism should work, responsible travel is more important than ever.
