Tesla India showroom:
Tesla Inc., the popular electric vehicle company led by Elon Musk, is finally entering the Indian market. The company is planning to open its first showroom in Mumbai by mid-July 2025. This will mark Tesla’s official launch in India, the world’s third-largest automobile market.
According to a Bloomberg report, Tesla has already shipped a few units of the Model Y SUV from its Shanghai factory to Mumbai. These are rear-wheel drive electric vehicles and are the best-selling EVs in the world. After Mumbai, Tesla is expected to open another showroom in New Delhi.
Tesla has also imported Supercharger components, spare parts, car accessories, and merchandise from the US, China, and the Netherlands. The showroom locations are in premium business zones, targeting India’s affluent consumers.
For years, Tesla’s entry into India has been delayed due to high import taxes and debates around local manufacturing. However, things started moving forward after Elon Musk met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in early 2025.
The imported Model Y vehicles cost around ₹27.7 lakh (\$31,988) before duties. With India’s 70% import tax and additional charges, the final price is expected to be more than \$56,000. In contrast, the same model is priced at \$44,990 in the US and becomes cheaper with tax credits.
This high price could be a challenge for Tesla as electric vehicles currently make up just over 5% of car sales in India, and premium cars are only a small fraction of that.
Tesla is also hiring in India for roles in retail, charging infrastructure, and government policy. The company is setting up warehouse space in Karnataka and Gurugram, signaling long-term investment plans.
In short, Tesla’s entry into India is a big step and could help boost EV adoption in the country, though pricing and competition may pose initial challenges.
