Train Travel Tips: 5 Things Every Passenger Should Know

Train Travel Tips: 5 Things Every Passenger Should Know

Train Travel Tips: There is something special about travelling by train—the magnificent vistas, the rhythmic sound of the train tracks, and no closed spaces making it easier to walk around. Whether you’re commuting on a daily basis or travelling a long way for a holiday, the experience of being on a train travelling through India can be pleasant and enjoyable – if you plan ahead. Here are five smart tips to help make your next train journey an enjoyable experience.

5 Essential Train Travel Tips:

1. Book Smart, Book Early
Indian train tickets are advanced booked, particularly for peak season and holidays. Advanced booking in IRCTC or official websites not only gets your seat booked but also provides you with a better selection of coaches. AC compartments on long-distance travel keep you cool and warmer.

2. Pack Essentials, But Travel Light
Though there are no rigid baggage weight restrictions in trains, light is always preferred. Pack wise: take a small bag with the essentials such as water bottles, toiletries, medicines, and a power bank. Add a clean bedsheet or shawl, if an overnight journey. Don’t leave an ID card behind either—TTEs (ticket examiners) do check!

3. Mind Your Safety and Belongings
Trains and coaches may be crowded. Keep your valuables close at all times. Chain and lock your bags, especially on sleeper coaches. Take care while consuming food provided by strangers, and consume the IRCTC e-catering food or food stalls approved by the Railways.

4. Know Your Train Etiquette
Respect shared areas—keep noise to a recognizably low level, don’t make loud calls, and don’t put your footwear on shared chairs. If you’re taking an upper berth, don’t take lower berths during the day unless invited. This will only make things more comfortable for everyone on board if you are courteous.

5. Be Aware of Delays and Platforms
Train schedules can change due to weather or traffic. Check the train platform and schedule in real time with apps such as NTES (National Train Enquiry System) or the IRCTC Rail Connect app. Arriving at the station on time, gives you some leeway to avoid unexpected platform changes.
