KL Rahul breaks another record with century against England in Leeds. Rahul has become the Indian opener to score the most centuries on English soil in Test cricket. This was Rahul’s third century on English soil in red-ball cricket. Rahul had previously scored centuries at The Oval in 2018 and at Lord’s in 2021. With this, KL Rahul has surpassed Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Vijay Merchant and Ravi Shastri, who have scored two centuries each as openers on English soil.
Rahul scored a century in Leeds in 202 balls, batting cautiously. This is the ninth century of his Test career. It is also noteworthy that six of these centuries have been on foreign pitches. Rahul was dismissed for 42 runs in the first innings. Rishabh Pant, who scored centuries in both innings, had also achieved achievements earlier. Pant has become the first Indian wicketkeeper batsman to score centuries in both innings of a Test. After scoring centuries in both innings, Pant has achieved some other achievements. Pant is also the seventh Indian to score centuries in both innings of a Test.
Pant is also the first Indian to score centuries in both innings on English soil. Pant also became the second wicketkeeper in world cricket to score centuries in both innings of a Test. Former Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Andy Flower was the first. Flower’s achievement was against South Africa in 2001. Pant is also the fifth Asian batsman to score two centuries in a Test in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries.
The other players to achieve this feat are Virat Kohli (Adelaide, 2014), Rahul Dravid (Hamilton, 1999), Asanka Gurusinha (Hamilton, 1991) and Vijay Hazare (Adelaide, 1948). Meanwhile, India’s second innings ended on 364. England need 371 runs to win in Leeds. England, who started batting in reply, have scored 21 runs without losing a wicket at the end of the fourth day.
